Jonathan Trampfine has an unrivald fascination with black bears. He has spent several years in the Layton Lake District living in proximity to the bear population. Doc has expressed concerns that Jonathan is endangering himself by trying to "befriend" the wild animals, but it has fallen on deaf ears. Instead, Jonathan attempts to document all of his close encounters and observations on film. He will never hunt his so-called "friends".
Trampfine and Richard Hope often clash over their views, as Trampfine believes Hope's survivalist methods are destroying nature rather than aiding it. So far. it has amounted to no more than a heated exchange of words across distant landscapes, but Doc worries things could escalate further.
